Is Your Iron Supplement Making You Constipated and Nauseous?

Iron deficiency is linked to reduced capacity for physical activity, reduced productivity and increased fatigue leading to poorer cognitive work performance. Iron deficiency can lead to a condition called iron deficiency anemia. National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2015 study stated that the overall prevalence of anaemia in Malaysia was 24.6% among the population aged 15 years and above.

Figure 1: The prevalence of anaemia and average iron intake according to the recommended nutrient intake (RNI) of both genders are shown in the above.

The recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) of iron of various age groups are shown below.

To prevent iron deficiency, it is encouraged to consume iron and vitamin C rich foods with examples shown below:

However, most individuals do not consume enough dietary iron which often leads to the reliance on supplements. Iron supplementation, dietary modification and food fortification are ways to combat iron deficiency. Traditional iron supplements and other iron formulations are usually high in iron concentration to overcome its low absorption and efficacy. This highconcentration will result in side effects such as stomach upset and pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dark stool, urine discolouration and heartburn.
