World Arthritis Day

Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints. It can be referred to more than 150 diseases which are usually associated with pain and disability. Close to 22.7% of adults had doctor-diagnosed arthritis and ~43.5% of them have limitations in their daily activities.

The common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder where the body cells do not recognise the lining of the joint as a part of the body and attacks it. Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear of the joint’s cartilage which results in the deterioration of bones. Regardless, both show common signs like pain, swelling, stiffness and occasionally redness.

The prevalence of arthritis increases along with age. However, this does not indicate that younger people are not prone to such conditions as statistics have shown that more than 3 in 5 people below the age of 65 are suffering from arthritis. Patients with underlying medical conditions like joint injuries and obesity also face a higher risk for arthritis as it exerts force onto the joints.
