World Arthritis Day

Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability and it affects more than 350 million people in the world. This term refers to more than 150 diseases which are usually associated with pain and the inability to perform daily tasks.

As opposed to the usual belief, arthritis does not only affect the elderly as more than 3 in 5 people below the age of 65 are suffering from arthritis. The women’s population (23.5%) was found to be more prevalent compared to the men’s population (18.1%). Higher prevalence of arthritis was also found in physically inactive people (23.6%) than people who have met the recommended levels of physical activity (18.1%).

There has been an increase of 14.5% of deaths which is equivalent to 17.9 million, attributed to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) globally from 2006 to 2016. That is 3 in every 10 deaths and is expected to grow to over 23.6 million by 2030.

World Suicide Prevention Day

Suicide is one of the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages, accounting to over 800,000 deaths every year.

World Suicide Prevention Day, organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) was created to promote awareness on suicide, mental illnesses associated with suicide as well as suicide prevention; on the 10th of September, every year. This day provides worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003. Speaking up about mental illnesses and suicide is important as this can increase awareness and reduce stigma on mental illnesses.
